Welcome to The I-81 Challenge virtual public meeting!

As you may be aware, portions of I-81, particularly the elevated sections of the highway in downtown Syracuse, are nearing the end of their lifespan. Over the next decade, these portions of the road will need to be replaced, reconstructed, removed, or otherwise changed at a significant cost. The I-81 Challenge is the official decision-making process through which the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC), and concerned citizens such as you will develop and evaluate options for the future of this vital corridor.

We've designed this "virtual" meeting to replicate the information and opportunities to provide feedback and input that were available at our in-person meeting on May 9, 2011.

We hope you will visit some or all of our stations and:

  • Read our information boads
  • Participate in our interactive exercises to give us your ideas
  • And give us some feedback on this meeting.

If you know of other members of our community who were not able to attend our May 9 meeting, please help us spread the word that all the materials are available here in our "virtual" meeting.

We know that your time is valuable, and we have done our best to make this meeting informative and participatory. We hope that, through this meeting, we can hear your thoughts on what we have done so far and continue to address your issues and concerns as we move forward. Thank you for your participation.

Sincerely,

James D'Agostino, Director
Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council

Carl F. Ford, P.E., Regional Director
New York State Department of Transportation
